While Johnny Cochran seized much of the attention and fame for his “If the gloves don’t fit, you must acquit” speech during the O.J. Simpson trial, Robert L. Shapiro is considered to be one of the main masterminds behind O.J. being victorious in that trial and getting an acquittal. Currently, Robert Shapiro is a partner in the Christensen, Miller, Fink, Jacobs, Glaser, Weil & Shapiro firm, which boasts about 120 lawyers in all. These lawyers focus on everything from celebrity trials to corporate trials to trials that test the very legal system of this country. In addition to working trials, Robert L. Shapiro has also written a book, titled “Misconception,” that explains many examples in which he has tested the legal system and changed the way that it works.

The name Marsha Clark evokes a whole sense of remembrance and nostalgia for those people who are familiar with the O.J. Simpson trial of the 1990s. As a member of the District Attorney’s office, which she joined in 1981, Marsha Clark spearheaded the group attempting to convict O.J. Simpson in the murder against his ex-wife Nicole and her boyfriend. In many ways, Marsha Clark, who eventually went on to write the book “Without A Doubt” about the trial, brought out the most appealing aspects of the trial and made it one of the most watched trials ever on television.

The Reverend Al Sharpton, who actually triples as a reverend, lawyer, and civil rights activist, was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1954 and was already preaching to large crowds at the ripe age of 9! He was just 9 years old when he was ordained as a minister. In his younger years, Al Sharpton was an important figure in his high school, leading protests against everything from the food served in the cafeteria to the dress code enforced by the school. With these skills within him, it is no wonder that the Reverend Al Sharpton decided that the legal system was the right place for him to thrive.

Due to their level of public exposure and courtroom presence, many lawyers eventually break into the mainstream of America and become famous on some level. Robert L. Shapiro, Marsha Clark, Johnny Cochran, and Christopher Darden all became household names following the O.J. Simpson murder trial. But, in actuality, the most famous of lawyers are probably not even remembered in American history as being famous for their roles as lawyers. Here are just a few examples of lawyers in American history:

  • Abraham Lincoln – the 16th president of the United States of America
  • John Jay – a lawyer, as well as the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court
  • John Marshall – another renowned member of the Supreme Court who served as a lawyer first
  • Stephen Douglas – was a lawyer before his classic debates with future President Abe Lincoln
